Rule of Law in the Western Balkans

The AIRE Centre has an unrivalled record of delivering rule of law programmes in the Western Balkans.  For twenty years now, the AIRE Centre has worked at all levels of the judiciary across the region, from justice ministries and supreme courts to the judicial training centres responsible for the training and development of judges. AIRE centre also cooperates with NGO sector across the region to help foster legal reform and respect for the fundamental rights.

The initial activities were launched in Serbia and in Montenegro in 1999 and expended in the mid 2000’s to Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia and Kosovo.

At present the AIRE centre implements a number of bilateral and regional initiatives in the Western Balkans, engaging leading international and regional experts in order to build domestic capacity to meet the rule of law requirements of membership of the Council of Europe, and now the European Union. Activities range from capacity building training to development of handbooks, online tools and support to processes legislative reform across the region.
