Our recruitment cycles:

We recruit 2-3 times a year, usually for Legal Caseworker Interns who can come into our London office, although we are flexible to remote and/or hybrid working. Interns are asked for a minimum commitment of 3 days a week for 3 months.

 

What do interns do?

Interns are allocated to either our EU or UK team, and work on a range of tasks such as speaking to callers on the advice line, writing advice letters, legal research, maintaining client correspondence logs and writing blogs for our website.

Our interns enjoy gaining hands-on experience and particularly appreciate the variety of tasks they are given. 

The work is a good balance of administrative tasks (such as logging correspondence) and more substantive legal work. On some days, I may draft an advice letter, written to a client, on behalf of the AIRE Centre, setting out the recommended legal approach to their issue. In many ways, it feels similar to a “real-life” problem question.

My work varies, but I am often conducting legal research and drafting documents, including reports and court submissions. I have also supported with preparing and delivering training, which has been a great opportunity to improve my oral presentation skills. When supporting the UK team with EUSS applications, I have completed tasks such as drafting witness statements and preparing supporting letters.

What is unique about this experience?

Our interns are given a high level of responsibility and are often at the forefront of seeing law and policy changes in real time. They speak directly to callers on our advice line, and are involved in cases with often, vulnerable people. From exercising your legal research skills and writing advice letters to accompanying lawyers to UK courts, the opportunities at the AIRE Centre provide hands-on experience.

I have completed several internships, but this is the first role in which I have been given genuinely substantive work, a relatively high level of responsibility, and the opportunity to contribute to active cases throughout.

Interns are given a high level of responsibility and are expected to produce full drafts. These are reviewed by the team before they are sent, but often only minor amendments are required, which makes you feel that you are making a meaningful contribution.

Why should you apply?

If you want to gain hands-on experience in human rights law, making real change through a varied workload, you should definitely apply.

If you are genuinely interested in the law and in helping people, I would strongly encourage you to consider applying to the AIRE Centre. The internship provides insight into the type of work lawyers do in this area, and what it is like to work across a range of cases and client situations. If you are comfortable taking responsibility and want a hands-on learning experience, the legal intern role is an excellent opportunity.
