The first edition of the Legal Bulletin "Human Rights in Europe" was published in January 2000. It is a monthly Bulletin that provides relevant up-to-date information of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

The editions of the Bulletin so far have provided legal practitioners and members of the human rights community in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Albania, Poland, Moldova, Georgia and Macedonia with a greater understanding of human rights standards. In particular, they have helped:

  • to provide a basis for human rights training workshops (they have been used extensively in the training seminars organised by the AIRE Centre, and its alumni network all receive the Bulletin)
  • to provide assistance to those concerned with the administration of justice (lawyers, judges and public officials) in solving problems they are currently facing
  • to influence initiatives and proposals for legal amendments
  • to provide a useful lobbying tool for human rights activists

The Bulletin aims to be concise, targeted and easy to use. Each edition is no more than twenty pages. It carries summaries of the most recent judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, with brief commentaries explaining their particular relevance against the background of existing European human rights standards.

The focus is on those judgments most relevant to the problems of central and south-eastern Europe. It is produced in English and then translated into local languages.

From the first edition of the Bulletin in year 2000 the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy have been supporting the production of the Bulletin, and with their further assistance we have now been able to develop and publish the Bulletin database on this website. Thanks to a grant from the Council of Europe we are able to distribute the Bulletin to all judges, prosecutors and court experts in Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
